the gunman's older brother ryan lanza into custody for questioning. newtown police arrived at sandy hook elementary school shortly after 9:30 in the morning. they quickly called for state backup and a s.w.a.t. team and released word to expect the worst. >> the majority of those who died today were children beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. >> reporter: parents rushed to pick up their children. >> there's 20 parents that were just told their children are dead. >> reporter: while the investigation continues it is already one of the worst mass shootings in u.s. history. counselors were on site this afternoon and a vigil was held tonight at a nearby church and many people here saying that this town will never be the same again. in newtown, connecticut, ines ferre, now back to you. >>> newtown, connecticut, is in the southwestern part of the state. it's roughly 80 miles northeast of new york city. the population is about 27,500 people and encompasses will 60 square miles about the same size as carmel-by-the-sea here in california. there are four elementary schools

victims of the sandy hook elementary school shooting. seven year old josephine gay. joey as she was often called. loved the color purple, her i-pad, and barbie dolls. her parents said she had a zest for life. a 90 minute service was held for her saturday. with people leaving cards and notes outside the church. police officers were also there, paying their respects. and in utah. another victim of the school massacre was laid to rest. a service for six year old emilie parker was held across the street from where her parents first started dating. emile was buried next to her grandfather. he died just a few months ago. residents of ogden, utah tied pink ribbons around trees to show their support. pink was emilie's favorite color. >> as newtown held funerals, one after another, all week long, one radio station in town became a shoulder to cry on for many locals. "chaz and a-j in the morning" is usually a fun and light-hearted start to the morning. but in the days since the shootings, hundreds of people have called in to share tears, memories and advice about moving on. >> we like to call it a

at sandy hook elementary is bringing back grim memories of other school shootings. in 1999 two students opened fire at columbine high school in littleton colorado killing a dozen classmates and teachers before turning the gun on himself. another gunman killed himself at the virginia tech campus and killed 33. and earlier this year, a gunman shot and killed several people at oikos university. that man is now in jail. we have comments from some of the family members of the the oikos shooting. >>> and law enforcement sources say at least three guns were found at the shooting scene. two pistols were found inside the school. one was a glock. a three 234 caliber rifle was at a car parked at that school. that car is said to belong to the gunman's mother. the debate over guns flairs up every time there's a shooting like this. we'll take a look at california's own gun laws. >>> the school shooting once again raises questions about campus security, what can be done to better protect children, students and faculty from another deadly attack. >>> ktvu's alex sadvige has been looking at this with se
